🇩🇪 Zweiteilige Konnektoren
Two-part connectors work as a pair: both halves appear in the same sentence. Below are eight of them, with the rules to watch for each.
1. Sowohl … als auch — as well as (also)
z. B. Wir haben sowohl am Montag als auch am Freitag einen Doppelunterricht.
z. B. Martina ist sowohl schön als auch fleißig.
★ The subject should be the same on both sides.
★ No comma (,) comes.
2. Nicht nur … sondern auch — not only … but also
z. B. Peter lernt nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Hindi.
★ When two verbs are used, auch comes after the verb.
z. B. Ich mache nicht nur Hausaufgaben, sondern ich sehe auch fern.
3. Weder … noch — neither … nor
z. B. Für Karin hat Peter weder Geld noch Zeit.
★ No comma (,) comes.
4. Entweder … oder — either … or
z. B. Ich nehme entweder einen Kaffee oder einen Tee.
★ No comma (,) comes.
5. Zwar … aber — indeed … but
z. B. Zwar ist Peter arm, aber er ist zufrieden.
z. B. Man findet zwar Pommes lecker, aber sie schmecken mir nicht gut.
6. Nicht … sondern — not … rather
z. B. Man soll nicht mit dem Auto fahren, sondern mit dem Rad.
z. B. Man soll den Abfall nicht auf den Boden werfen, sondern in den Mülleimer.
7. Je … desto — the more … the
★ Only used with the Komparativ (comparative degree) of an adjective.
★ In the je-part, the conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause.
★ In the desto-part, the verb is in 2nd position, before the subject.
Pattern: Je + Komparativ + Subjekt + … + Verb (conjugated, at the end), desto + Komparativ + (Nomen) + Verb + Subjekt
z. B. Je älter der Wein wird, desto besser wird er.
z. B. Je länger ich fernsehe, desto stärker werden meine Kopfschmerzen.
8. Einerseits … andererseits — on the one hand … on the other hand
Pattern: Einerseits / andererseits + Verb + Subjekt
z. B. Einerseits ist Deutsch schwer, andererseits ist es sehr wichtig.
z. B. Der Tee ist einerseits heiß, andererseits ist er gut.
📌 Comma rule
Ohne Komma (no comma): weder … noch, entweder … oder, sowohl … als auch.
📌 Null Position — OSUDA
oder, sondern, und, denn, aber
These conjunctions sit in "position zero": they connect two clauses without changing the word order of the clause that follows.
